Colleen Lynch Interview, Freebie and Much More

Interview With Colleen Lynch, Digital ARTchives
Exclusive Designer for DigiDesignResort
1. How long have you been designing?

Gosh I have been working with Photoshop designing logos, brochures, and other graphics since 1997. I stumbled upon digital scrapbooking the year my grandson Will was born. I had been paper scrapping, but not getting much finished. I had a new digital SLR camera and had over 100 photos of my new grandson. As I sat in my office looking at the pile of unfinished paper scrapbook pages I was discouraged. I thought I don't want these photos to end up in that pile. Now being the stickler I am for detail, I use to map out my scrapbook pages in Photoshop, so I would have a template and all the measurements before I started cutting out my paper. I thought what if I just color in the shapes and frames and add a title and journaling? It might be OK... Well I did just that. Beveled the frames and added a few drop shadows and a new passion was born. I sent out copies to the family and received so many good comments back I decided to continue this new
craft. I got on the Internet and found, I wasn't alone. There were a few digital scrapbooking communities, but not real stores yet. Shortly after that in the fall of 2004 I began designing and digital scrapbooking began to grow.

2. When designing do you start with a color palette or theme first? Where do you get your inspiration from?

I usually start with a theme, then develop a color palette. Occasionally I do it the other way, but not very often. My themes come from many places, but often they are inspired by my grand kids, usually something they are interested in. Since I have all boys for grand kids I have to get my feminine fix, so my love of flowers and vintage inspire many kits as well. When I am short on inspiration I just look around's everywhere. In a garden, my closet, a magazine...anything I love I can turn into a digital creation. Once I have my theme, I like to develop it by writing down phrases, quotes, words, etc, that I eventually turn into my word art, but it helps me get a good feel for the theme before I begin designing. I then start to build the color palette. I start with a direction, and play with the colors until I like what I have. I usually create the papers first, then the elements, then the alphabet and lastly the word art.

3. Do you scrap your own kit layouts or others?

Mostly I scrap with my own kits basically due to a limited amount of time for scrapping. I like to make at least a few pages with every kit to be sure the kit is complete and everything works well together.

4. How would you best describe your style?

I am never sure what to say when asked this, but I would think it is more traditional. I love to photograph items to extract but I also love to build digital items as well.

5. Tell us something of your family?

I am married to a wonderful man, Joe. It is a second marriage for both of us and it's true the second time is the charm, lol! Between us we have 6 grown children and 4 grandchildren. In my spare time I enjoy photography, paper crafts, floral arrangements, nature, and word games. My husband and I share an interest in Egyptian and Biblical history and science fiction. We live in a quaint antiquing town along the Fox River in St Charles, Illinois. It is about 45 miles west of Chicago.
